About the school

The School of Journalism at Kyiv Mohyla Academy (Kyiv, Ukraine) was established in 2001. The Kyiv Mohyla Academy is one of Ukraine’s leading universities and the first to introduce new and progressive standards of journalism education in Ukraine.

Our school of journalism consists of a two-year graduate program, with a heavy emphasis on practical skills in different kinds of media. The entrance committee accepts only applicants with BA or MA degrees and some professional experience in journalism. Our students are not only graduates of undergraduate journalism programs, but also have backgrounds in the social sciences, culture studies, linguistics, history, economics, and natural sciences.

The mission of our School is to serve Ukrainian society:

  • Academically – by raising the standards of journalism education in Ukraine and by creating new approaches for the teaching of journalism;
  • Publicly – by influencing the media industry through critique, training programs, professional discussions, and through the raising of the level of public media literacy.

The School’s specialization is News & Current Affairs coverage for different types of media, including the New Media (multi-skilling).

Curriculum

The traditional theoretical form of education is combined with a practical approach. All courses are divided into two sequences: practical (skills development) and theoretical (academic research).

From a research point of view, journalism at our School is considered as a social-political field, rather than a linguistic discipline, as was the case in Soviet times.

Practical training is conducted through a Learning by Doing scheme. Students produce:

All students are expected to have a good command of English in order to complete their education and professional activities. Most NaUKMA faculties provide some instruction in English.

Activities

Students have access to all our technical training facilities, which include a TV studio, Internet radio station, photo studio, newsroom, cameras, and equipment for non-linear editing.

Our School participates in numerous international projects. Initially, we had UK DFID support for three years, and cooperated with Leeds University in introducing new curriculum and western standards of journalism in Ukraine.

The Mohyla School of journalism organizes wide-ranging extra-curricular activities. We offer training programs for different media outlets in Ukraine. We organized reporting training for journalists from local media in 2005, and documentary production training in 2006. In 2007 we plan an online media workshop for professionals.
